“Portraits in Caregiving”

Southern Caregiver Resource Center

“Portraits in Caregiving” is a photo-documentary depicting varying emotions experienced by caregivers selflessly tending to their loved ones affected by chronic and disabling conditions including dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and Parkinson’s disease. The series aims to honor the clients of Southern Caregiver Resource Center (SCRC) by capturing the essence of family and unconditional love through intimate and tender moments found in the everyday routine of caregiving.

Try and find resources like SCRC. Take advantage of what you can find to get through it because…  [caregiving is] a full time plus job. Whatever help you can get, whatever hand that’s going to give to you, take it, take it, take it.”

     -Wendy, caregiver

“[Photo & Studio’s] ability to build trust and capture heartfelt, candid moments with our caregivers—many of whom had never participated in a photo shoot—was remarkable. The project even attracted media attention from Veronica Guzman, News Anchor at Univision, helping us raise awareness for our mission throughout the greater San Diego area.”

INSTALLATION

As part of the photo series, the complete project has been installed at Southern Caregiver Resource Center’s main office in Chula Vista, California. This installation is featured in an ongoing gallery exhibition that highlights the compassion, dedication, and challenges faced by the caregivers served by SCRC. Glenner Town Square

Nostalgic and comforting are just a few words we would use to describe Glenner Town Square, a “specialized senior center for those with memory loss,” located in Chula Vista, California. With its replica Thunderbird greeting you as soon as you walk into the facility, you are transported back to a time remembered only in the minds of the care receivers who spend their days there. A retro diner, a billiards room, and an old-school cinema are just a few of the spaces where groups of participants and staff engage in daily activities.

These activities reflect one of the core modalities Glenner Town Square aims to provide its guests with every visit: Social, Physical, Intellectual, Creative, and Educational—collectively known as SPICE.

Our photographs aim to translate that message into a visual experience for those interested in understanding more about the mission of Glenner Town Square.
